EAA AIRVENTURE

DISCREPANCIES NOTED:

  1. Prop spinner loose/wobbly on the dome of the V-530 hub.  Suggested repair: Recommended by WhirlWind Propellers – McMaster Carr P/N: 76445A743  Low-Friction UHMW Tape, 0.0065" Thick, 1" Wide, 15 Feet Long
  2. Prop spinner screws smoking (loose). Suggested repair: Clean residue and tighten screws after fixing #1.
  3. Felt seal on cowl louver ring is covering the blade axles and is in poor condition.  Suggested repair:  Replace the sealing ring and do not cover the blade axle heads
  4. Foam sock on nose case breather snorkel. Suggestion: Remove.
  5. Sump drain valve is leaking.  Suggested repair: Drain oil from sump, remove drain, disassemble, clean, lap and leak test.*

    Before: Pitting corrosion

    After: Polished

*Put a plastic cap over the sump drain hole to ensure that dirt and grit does not migrate into the drain valve and cause scoring of the sealing surfaces.
  6. #7,9,5,4,3,2 Air lines/valves are loose at the cylinder head. Suggested repair:   Purchase new crushwashers and install. (This may be a good time to disassemble and clean your air start valves in each cylinder.
  7. Pushrod nut/nipples leaking. Suggested repair: Tighten carefully. (There is a compression ring inside of the nut that forms a seal against the flared pushrod housing.  If the nut is over-tightened it can flatten the flare on the housing.
  8. #1 and #2 Intake rocker cover flappers are too loose. Suggested repair:  Remove rocker covers and inspect rocker cover and gasket.  Replace if necessary.  Reinstall rocker cover.  Tension on cable/flapper is good when you have a positive over-center and cannot undo by hand.
  9. Oil temp electrical connector is loose. Suggested repair:  Find reason it is loose and repair.
  10. Lord mount rubbers need replacement. Suggested repair:  Replace with new set.  In the future, do not allow oil or solvent to sit on the rubbers as it will shorten their life.
  11. Blower nuts may be loose, where shielded ignition harness was removed. Suggested repair: Tighten nuts. If they are nylock and loose, replace with original-style hardware: nut, lockwasher and washer.  **** We have had engines arrive in our shop with hardware missing because the mechanic did not reinstall the hardware, after removing the ignition harness and installing automotive wire.
  12. Thermowell base plate leaking. Suggested repair:  This Nanchang thermowell was mounted on the oil outlet side of the oil pump.  The base plate of the fitting is fairly thin material and may be “warped”, causing a significant oil leak. The fitting may need to be flat-plated and install a new gasket.
  13. Rudder has strange squeak. Suggested repair:   Remove panel ahead of vertical stabilizer and inspect further to determine the source of the noise.
  14. Chafing on lower cowl.  Suggested repair: Investigate and correct whatever is chafing on the formers of the cowling.  Install new anti-chafe.
